Civil Construction – Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
Walsh Service Solutions, in partnership with Geo-Solutions, executed a complex subsurface stabilization project at a century-old federal facility. The project focused on the installation of a specialized cutoff wall to provide critical seepage control and structural containment in challenging geological conditions.
Project Overview
-
Project Value: $2.25M
-
Timeline: Spring – Summer 2023
-
Location: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
-
Core Operation: SCCB Cutoff Wall Installation
Project Scope & Operations
-
Specialized Wall Installation: Successfully installed a Slag-Cement-Cement-Bentonite (SCCB) cutoff wall designed for long-term subsurface containment.
-
Precision Excavation: Managed the construction of a trench spanning 1,850 feet in length and 3 feet in width, reaching depths of up to 30 feet.
-
Obstruction Mitigation: Navigated significant technical challenges, including the identification and removal of large debris and the management of subsurface voids located within the 100+ year-old facility’s footprint.
-
Technical Collaboration: Partnered with Geo-Solutions to ensure precise mix designs and slurry wall integrity under demanding remote-site conditions.
The Result
Despite the subsurface complexities of the historic site, the $2.25M project was completed on schedule in the summer of 2023. The SCCB wall provides a robust, low-permeability barrier that secures the facility’s infrastructure against seepage, ensuring the long-term stability of this critical federal asset.
