HTRW Remediation – Sault Ste. Marie (2022 – Present)
Federal Industrial Abatement & Hazardous Waste Management
Walsh Service Solutions is executing a large-scale Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) remediation project at a 100+ year-old federal facility in a remote location. This complex, multi-year mission involves the systematic abatement of legacy contaminants across both surface structures and subsurface infrastructure.
Project Overview
-
Current Value: $10.19M
-
Timeline: 2022 – Present (95% Complete)
-
Location: Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan
-
Key Metrics: 2,800 CY of impacted material | 40,000 sq. ft. of paint abatement | 10,000+ linear feet of wire removal
Project Scope & Key Challenges
-
Comprehensive Abatement: Performing Class I & II asbestos abatement on surface structures and complex subsurface utility vaults, pits, and maintenance wells.
-
Heavy Metal & PCB Remediation: Execution of specialized paint abatement on machinery, cement floors, and cinderblock walls containing lead, cadmium, chromium, and PCBs.
-
Subsurface Utility Management: Systematic removal of over 10,000 linear feet of lead/PCB-coated wiring from aging utility networks.
-
Chemical & Universal Waste Sweep: Identification, containment, and removal of all universal waste and PCB transformers from the entire site.
-
Remote Logistics: Managing hazardous waste transport and specialized labor at a century-old facility with significant accessibility constraints.
The Result
Despite the challenges of a century-old site and a high concentration of mixed hazardous materials, WSS is nearing the successful completion of this $10M+ effort. Our team’s rigorous adherence to environmental safety protocols ensures the facility is being returned to a compliant, hazard-free state for future use.
